MOGADISHU:-The US government has called on President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and Parliament to act swiftly to annul the extension bill for the government before resumption of electoral talks between the federal government and its member states.
In a statement, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said the Biden administration welcomed the announcement by Farmaajo Tuesday to accept a return to the negotiating table.
“The United States notes President Farmaajo’s April 28 commitment to return to the September 17 election agreement and resume talks immediately with Federal Member State leaders,” Price said. “We call on the President and Parliament to act swiftly to annul the April 12 mandate extension bill.”
The US remarks come a day after Hirshabelle and Galmudug, Farmajo allied states decided to turn against the president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, rejecting a term extension.
“We agreed that the country should hold elections as soon as possible and that any form of extension should be abolished,” a joint statement from the two states read in part.
Prime Minister Mohamed Roble immediately welcomed the decision by the states.
Hours later, the outgoing president urged a return to negotiations on the country’s delayed election and vowing that the sight of rival soldiers clashing in the streets of the capital would not happen again.
Farmaajo called on the regional state leaders to discuss means to discuss means to implement the 17 September 2020 agreement, and the 16 February 2021 Baidoa Technical Committee recommendations.
